Have you ever seen someone smile and noticed a dark line in the gums of his or her teeth? Maybe you are one of these people who are uncomfortable with this dark edge.
These dark lines are created by porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. The dark line is actually a shadow created by the metal under the porcelain.
Light does not travel through the metal causing the tooth above the crown margin to appear black. When first placed, these margins are usually hidden under your gums. Over time, the gum can recede and expose a dark shadow.
Modern ceramic restorations do not create the dark line problem because they possess a translucency which allows light to pass through thereby creating a more natural-looking tooth. When properly placed, in most situations, they are as strong, if not stronger, than the porcelain–covered metal crowns. Even in situations where porcelain-to-metal restorations are still required, newer techniques allow Dr. Mawyer to eliminate the dark line.
